The push for a more standardized and better compass was part of a broader program to standardize equipment in all services after World War II (see my article on the Air Force Survival Knife).
The Taylor Instrument Company and the Brunson Instrument Company submitted prototype compasses that met US Army specifications and published standards. Brunson's compass was adopted, and the project to create a new standardized lens compass was completed in 1952. The new lens compass was named Compass, Magnetic, M-1950.
